WRAP UP
The Wiffle Ball was hardly what many would consider a high-tech innovation. Sure, there was advanced technology applied in coming up with the right materials and perhaps even a bit of science in finding the right hole sizes and formations. But it was not rocket science.Yet, what we learned from the Wiffle Ball and from Dickens’s writing of A Christmas Carolwas that innovation follows a process. It begins with identifying a need and is followed by careful research, experimentation, and the involvement of the right people to pursue the idea from birth to maturity.
Sometimes the process spreads over years and requires loads of patience. Occasionally a little luck or serendipity speeds it along.
But in most cases, the key to innovation is the people behind it— people like Leonardo who are curious, persistent, and knowledgeable, who can see things from multiple perspectives.
REFLECTIONS
• Charles Dickens’s innovation was stimulated by wandering around his community, tapping into his readers’ needs and hearts. In your attempts to be innovative, do you make time for exploration?
• The Wiffle Ball involved input from the kids, from the dad, from plastics experts, from savvy marketers. Do you involve the right people in your efforts to be innovative?
• Leonardo’s knowledge ranged from art to music to geometry to science and beyond. How broad are your interests and studies? Do you invest enough resources to learn what you must know to accomplish your dreams and goals?
• Leonardo was impatient with himself and critical of his own work. In your efforts to learn and create, are you patient with yourself?
